Netflix series shot in Southold premieres this week
The new, star-studded Netflix limited series that was shot in Southold premieres this week.
Sirens, a dark comedy with a star-studded cast that includes Kevin Bacon, Meghann Fahy, Julianna Moore and Milly Alcock, is described by the streaming giant as an “incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power and class.”
The series unfolds over a Labor Day weekend and follows Devon DeWitt (Fahy), who grows suspicious after sensing that her sister Simone (Alcock) seems to have fallen under the spell of her cult-like boss, socialite Michaela Kell (Moore), who is married to old money billionaire Peter Kell (Bacon). Fearful that her sister is being manipulated, Devon decides to stage an intervention and travels to a remote island “where mansions and hydrangeas abound — and where she comes to realize that the surrounding waters are murkier than they first appear.”
The show was created by Molly Smith Metzler, showrunner of the Netflix series Maids, based on her 2011 play Elemeno Pea.
“This story has a lot of teeth,” Smith Metzler to the streamer’s viewer companion blog ‘Tudum.’ “There are real moments of drama, and it’s going to make people uncomfortable. Operatic is a word I like to use to describe it. It’s a true dark comedy — and it’s got a Greek mythology vibe.”
The series was shot last summer at an undisclosed estate in Southold, and the production paid $50,000 to set up a production and logistics location at Southold’s Recreation Center on Peconic Lane, according to local officials. Netflix also temporarily secured the Southold Town Hall Annex on Main Rd. for $20,000 for the shoot to use in the event of inclement weather.
